Sweden in brief

A fintech nursery, under a demanding regulator.

Sweden licenses crypto-asset service providers under MiCA, with Finansinspektionen - FI - as the single competent authority. FI supervised virtual-asset firms before MiCA under the money-laundering rules, so it arrives at CASP authorisation with an informed, and frankly sceptical, eye. It has been openly cautious about crypto - flagging consumer risk and, at one point, the energy footprint of proof-of-work mining. None of that is a barrier to a serious applicant. It sets the tone: FI wants a real business, well run, and it says so plainly.

That demanding posture is the reason a Swedish licence is worth carrying. Sweden built Klarna, iZettle and a generation of payment and platform companies; it is one of the most cashless and digitally literate societies on earth, English is effectively a second working language, and the engineering talent is deep. An FI authorisation from that environment is read as a credible stamp, and it passports into all 27 EU states from a Nordic base with a 20.6% corporate rate. We prepare files that meet FI where it sets the bar.

Around it sits a genuine fintech ecosystem - Klarna, iZettle, deep engineering talent, a cashless society and near-native English. Corporate tax is 20.6%; the passport covers 27 states.

Licence classes

One authorisation, scoped to your services.

MiCA defines ten crypto-asset services across three capital classes. FI authorises the exact scope you apply for, and the scope drives capital, systems and the depth of the file. We fix the perimeter first, then build once.

Why Sweden

A credible stamp from a hard-to-please house.

The framework rests on MiCA and Sweden's national execution act, supervised by FI - inside one of the world's most advanced fintech economies.

A genuine fintech ecosystem

Klarna, iZettle and a deep bench of payment and platform companies were built here. The talent, the investor base and the operating know-how a crypto firm needs already exist in the market.Talent, capital and know-how already here.

Cashless and digital-first

Sweden is among the most cashless societies on earth, with near-universal digital ID and high financial literacy. A licensed, tech-forward CASP operates on rails the whole country already uses.Digital ID and rails the whole country uses.

FI's scrutiny is the point

Finansinspektionen is demanding and has been openly cautious on crypto. That is a feature: an FI stamp is hard to earn, so counterparties read it as the applicant clearing a real bar.A hard-won stamp reads as credible.

English as a working language

Sweden ranks at the very top for English proficiency in Europe. Building a team, dealing with the regulator and running international operations happen without a language tax.Top of Europe - no language tax.

20.6% corporate tax

A competitive Nordic corporate rate, lower than several larger EU economies - a real figure in the operating model, and part of why fintechs base substance here.Below several larger EU economies.

One passport, Nordic base

A single FI authorisation passports into all 27 EU states after notification, from a Nordic domicile that carries weight across the region and beyond. All 27 EU states by notification.

FI reviews a CASP file the way it reviews a payment institution: completely, and with a sceptic's eye. The checklist below is what a file that passes actually contains - built to MiCA, the national execution act and the ESMA technical standards.

01
Swedish entity - an AB with its registered office and effective management in Sweden.
02
Substance - decision-making, compliance and at least part of operations genuinely in the country; letterbox setups fail.
03
Fit & proper management - a competent board and management with clean records and relevant experience.
04
Own funds - €50,000, €125,000 or €150,000 by service class, or a quarter of fixed overheads if higher.
05
Programme of operations - services, target markets, volumes and a three-year business plan FI can interrogate.
06
AML/CFT framework - KYC, EDD, monitoring and reporting to Finanspolisen, with a named compliance officer.
07
ICT and DORA compliance - resilience testing, incident reporting, a register of ICT providers and exit plans.
08
Safeguarding of client assets - segregation of client crypto and funds, custody policy and key-management design.
09
Governance - ownership disclosed up to UBOs, qualifying holdings declared, conflicts and complaints procedures.
10
Consumer-protection posture - FI weighs how you treat and inform clients; a serious conduct framework matters here.
11
Wind-down plan - credible, funded and documented.
01
Swedish AB with effective management here.
02
Real substance - compliance and decisions on the ground.
03
Fit & proper board and management.
04
Own funds €50k-€150k by class.
05
Programme of operations + 3-year plan.
06
AML/CFT with named officer, FIU reporting.
07
ICT resilience under DORA.
08
Segregation and custody of client assets.
09
Ownership disclosed up to UBOs.
10
Serious consumer-conduct framework.
11
Credible, funded wind-down plan.

FAQ

The Swedish crypto licence, answered.

What licence does a crypto business need in Sweden?+

CASP authorisation from Finansinspektionen under MiCA - required for exchange, brokerage, custody, transfer, advice and trading-platform services. FI supervised virtual-asset firms before MiCA under the AML rules; authorisation is now the way in.

Is FI hostile to crypto?+

Cautious, not closed. FI has flagged consumer risk and, at one point, mining's energy use - but it authorises serious, well-run applicants. The scrutiny raises the bar, which is exactly what makes a Swedish licence credible.

How much capital is required?+

MiCA's three classes: €50,000 for advice and order services, €125,000 for exchange, execution and custody, €150,000 for a trading platform - or a quarter of annual fixed overheads if that is higher.

How long does FI authorisation take?+

The MiCA clock is 25 working days to completeness plus 40 for assessment, but FI's completeness bar is the real timeline. Well-prepared files land in 6-10 months; thin files - especially with a sceptical regulator - circle far longer.

What substance does FI expect?+

A Swedish AB with effective management in the country: a competent board and management, a compliance function on the ground, a real office and systems that demonstrably run. Consumer-conduct standards are weighed closely.

Why Sweden rather than a faster desk?+

Credibility and ecosystem. An FI stamp is hard-won, so it reads well; and Sweden offers the fintech talent, capital and English-fluent operating base that a scaling crypto business actually needs.

How are crypto companies taxed?+

A competitive 20.6% corporate rate on company profits. Crypto-fiat exchange is VAT-exempt as a financial service; private-investor gains fall under capital-income rules; DAC8 reporting applies from 2026.

Does the Swedish licence passport across the EU?+

Yes - one FI authorisation covers all 27 EU member states through MiCA passporting after a notification, with no re-licensing, from a Nordic base that carries weight across the region.

What licence is needed?+

FI CASP authorisation under MiCA - the route in.

Is FI hostile to crypto?+

Cautious, not closed - it authorises serious firms.

Capital?+

€50k / €125k / €150k by service class.

How long?+

6-10 months; completeness drives it.

Substance?+

AB, board, real office and compliance.

Why Sweden?+

A credible stamp and a real fintech base.

Company taxes?+

20.6% corporate; VAT-exempt exchange.

EU passport?+

Yes - all 27 states by notification.
