Get a gambling license in Hungary.
Central Europe's newest open market: since January 2023, EEA operators can hold Hungary's remote gambling licence - a HUF 10 million administrative fee, HUF 600 million licence fee covering up to seven years, quarterly supervision at 2.5% of net gaming revenue, segregated Hungarian player accounts and a 120-day statutory clock at the SZTFH. A monopoly cracked open, for operators with the experience to enter.
Updated
The monopoly that opened its door.
For decades Hungarian online gambling belonged to the state: remote licences were reserved in practice for the national operator, and EU-law challenges piled up against the wall. On 1 January 2023 the wall moved - the amended Gambling Act opened remote gambling (online sports betting) licences to any Hungarian or EEA-established organisation meeting the statutory conditions, supervised by the SZTFH, the Regulated Activities Supervisory Authority. The entry mechanics are heavyweight and published: a non-refundable administrative service fee of HUF 10 million, a licence fee of HUF 600 million paid in advance for the licence period of up to seven years, a quarterly supervision fee of 2.5% of net gaming revenue (floor HUF 100,000, cap HUF 10 million), proof of five years' remote gambling operating experience, a security-audited technical system, and a segregated Hungarian bank account covering all withdrawable player balances at all times. Decisions run on a 120-day clock, with EEA representatives registered in 75.
The market behind the door is worth the stack: ten million consumers in a football-mad economy, EU-member legal standing, and a licence period long enough - seven years - to amortise the entry fee into rational per-year economics. The regime's texture matters: this is a licence designed for proven operators, not startups; the five-year experience requirement and the audit gates say so explicitly. Online casino remains tied to land-based concession structures - the open door is sports betting. We build the EEA structure, the experience file, the audits and the Hungarian banking architecture end to end - from our own Budapest office at Korányi Sándor u. 4.
The opened monopoly: since 1.1.2023 EEA operators can hold Hungary's remote betting licence - HUF 10M admin + HUF 600M for up to 7 years, 2.5% quarterly supervision (capped), 5 years' experience required, segregated Hungarian player account, 120-day clock.

The Hungary gaming licence - the questions we hear.
Is Hungary's gambling market really open?+
For remote gambling - online sports betting - yes: since 1 January 2023 any Hungarian or EEA-established organisation meeting the statutory conditions can apply to the SZTFH. Online casino remains tied to land-based concession structures.
What does the licence cost?+
A non-refundable administrative fee of HUF 10 million and a licence fee of HUF 600 million paid in advance for the licence period of up to seven years - plus a quarterly supervision fee of 2.5% of net gaming revenue (floor HUF 100,000, cap HUF 10 million).
What is the experience requirement?+
Five years of remote gambling operation, proven by the applicant or verified by the Authority - the gate that makes this a proven-operator market. We prepare the experience file first, because it decides eligibility.
What banking is required?+
A segregated Hungarian bank account covering all withdrawable player balances at all times - player-fund architecture built with local banks as part of the licence, not after it.
How long does licensing take?+
The statutory decision clock is 120 days, with non-resident EEA representatives registered in 75 - realistically six to ten months end to end including the audit and banking build.
Can a foreign company hold the licence?+
Any EEA-established organisation qualifies, with Hungarian representation registered for non-residents. Non-EEA groups enter through an EEA entity - we structure the seat as part of the build.
How are operators taxed?+
The published stack: the amortised licence fee, the capped 2.5% quarterly supervision fee and gaming tax per the Act's product schedules - against Hungary's 9% corporate rate, the EU's lowest. We model the full economics before entry.
What about online casino?+
Concession-linked: online casino rights attach to land-based casino concession structures, not open applications. We document that boundary for your product and route casino verticals to flags where they are licensable.
Is the market worth the entry stack?+
Ten million consumers, football-first betting culture, EU standing and an entry filter that keeps the field thin - for operators with the experience gate passed, the seven-year arithmetic is among the region's most interesting. We run the numbers with you, line by line.
