Where bureaucracy went digital and stayed there.
Denmark runs the most digitised public administration in Europe: companies register through the Virk portal without a notary, a CVR number arrives in hours once the file is right, and every filing after that (tax, VAT, annual reports) happens online. Around that machine sits a AAA economy with the world's leading wind industry, the Novo Nordisk pharma ecosystem, and a holding regime that passes qualifying dividends and share gains through untaxed - the little-advertised reason many international groups hold Europe from Copenhagen.
Corporate tax is 22%: sensible, not low. VAT is a flat 25% with no reduced bands, and personal taxation is famously Nordic, which matters if you move in and less if you don't. Danish employer costs hide a pleasant surprise, though: social contributions are minimal, so the wage is the cost. Banking is serious and post-scandal thorough - Danske, Nordea, Nykredit and fintechs like Lunar onboard foreign-owned companies with real KYC, and the mandatory NemKonto makes an account non-optional. The ApS is the operating vehicle; for tax-transparent structures Denmark also offers the K/S partnership, which we cover separately.

Talk to a specialist →The Danish questions, with straight answers.
Can I open a Danish company without visiting?+
Yes. The Virk registry is fully digital and we file on your behalf under power of attorney; no notary exists in the process. Banks decide their own meetings: fintechs onboard by video, traditional banks sometimes want one visit.
How much does it cost?+
Turnkey registration starts from €2,900 including registry fees and the first year of the registered address. With a bank or fintech account and NemKonto arranged, packages start from €4,900. Renewals with accounting run from €2,000 a year. The DKK 40,000 capital is the company's money, not a fee.
What taxes will the company pay?+
22% on profits, VAT at a flat 25% on domestic supplies, with exports and intra-EU sales zero-rated. Dividends to you personally carry 27-42% Danish withholding if you are taxable here, but to qualifying corporate parents, zero. We model both the operating and the holding picture before you commit.
Why do holding companies choose Denmark?+
The participation exemption. Dividends and share gains from qualifying subsidiaries (typically 10%+ ownership) arrive untaxed, and distributions to qualifying parent companies leave without withholding. Combined with treaties and EU directives, Copenhagen competes with Amsterdam and Luxembourg, at Danish predictability. We test the qualifying conditions before structuring.
How fast is registration, really?+
The registry itself works in hours once capital is confirmed and the file is right; CVR numbers routinely arrive the same day. End to end, plan 2-7 business days including capital deposit, tax and VAT registration. The bank, not the state, sets the slow lane.
What is NemKonto?+
Every Danish company must designate one official account (the NemKonto) where the state pays refunds and receives payments. It can be a Danish bank account or, in many setups, a fintech account. It is not optional, so we fold it into the banking step rather than let it surprise you later.
How is banking after the scandals?+
Careful, and better for it. Danske, Nordea, Nykredit and Jyske run thorough KYC on foreign-owned companies: ownership chain, business substance, expected flows. Fintechs like Lunar cover the operating layer faster. We prepare the file to post-scandal standards and match you to the institution that fits your profile.
What does hiring cost?+
Danish gross salaries are high, and that is nearly the whole story: employer social contributions are minimal by European standards. No French-style 40% on top; a small ATP payment and insurance. Flexible hiring and firing (flexicurity) reduces structural risk. Denmark often beats its salary reputation, and we model per role.
ApS or the Danish K/S?+
The ApS is the operating and holding workhorse: limited liability, 22% tax, full treaty access. The K/S is a tax-transparent limited partnership used in fund and structured setups, taxed at partner level. Different tools for different jobs; we run both and cover the K/S on its own page.
Denmark or Estonia / Netherlands?+
Estonia wins on deferral (0% until distribution) and remote-first admin, better for reinvesting startups. The Netherlands matches holding muscle with a bigger treaty web and higher rates. Denmark takes the middle: real Nordic substance, an hours-fast registry, the participation exemption, and a flag banks never question.
