Bahrain in brief

The Gulf's original financial centre, repriced as its best value.

Bahrain ran Gulf finance before Dubai had a skyline, and the institutional memory shows: the Central Bank of Bahrain is the region's most respected single regulator, first in MENA to mandate open banking and early with a real crypto framework; the banking cluster is deep; and the professional class is seasoned. What Bahrain sells today is that pedigree at a discount - operating costs run meaningfully below Dubai and Riyadh, and the structure is cleaner than either: 100% foreign ownership applies onshore across most activities, with no free-zone/mainland split to arbitrage and no local-sponsor folklore. Add Bahrain's US free-trade agreement - duty-free access to the American market for qualifying goods - a ten-year golden residency, and the King Fahd Causeway putting Saudi Arabia's real economy fifteen minutes away.

The honest terms: the famous 0% is no longer unconditional - Bahrain moved first in the Gulf to implement a domestic minimum top-up to 15% for multinational groups above €750 million, which changes nothing for founders and mid-sized companies today but tells everyone the direction of travel; we plan structures to age well. VAT runs at 10%. The island's own market is small - 1.5 million people - so Bahrain works as a base commanding the Gulf, above all Saudi demand across the causeway, not as a destination market. Banking is high-quality and seriously KYC'd: clean files onboard smoothly; improvised ones do not. For fintech, regional services and US-facing manufacturing, doing business in Bahrain offers one of the Gulf’s strongest value propositions.

Taxation 2026

Zero for most, fifteen for the giants - and nothing on the way out.

Corporate tax remains 0% in 2026 for most non-oil businesses; multinational groups above €750 million face a top-up to a 15% effective rate, while a 10% tax is proposed for 2027 for companies with annual revenue above BHD 1 million or net profit above BHD 200,000, subject to approval. There are no withholding taxes on dividends, interest or royalties, and no personal income tax. VAT is 10%; GOSI applies to payroll. FAQ

Bahrain company registration, answered.

Can I open a company in Bahrain without visiting?+

Mostly - Sijilat incorporation and registrations run by power of attorney. Banks generally want one meeting (some accept video for straightforward profiles), and golden-residency biometrics require presence. Many clients incorporate remotely and combine the bank with their first causeway trip.

How much does Bahrain company registration cost?+

Bahrain company formation starts from $3,400; Gulf banking starts from $5,900. Golden residency adds from $1,500; CBB licence tracks are scoped as their own projects. Renewals with accounting run from $2,000 a year - Dubai-grade output at a visible discount.

Can I register a company in Bahrain with 100% ownership and no sponsor?+

Yes, and it is Bahrain's cleanest advantage: onshore companies in the great majority of activities are wholly foreign-owned, with no local-sponsor requirement and no mainland/free-zone split to navigate. A short list of activities keeps Bahraini-participation conditions - we screen your exact activity against it before anything is filed.

Is the 0% corporate tax going away?+

Honest answer: not in 2026, but the direction is clear. Since 2025, Bahrain has applied a domestic minimum top-up to 15% to multinational groups above €750 million, while most companies below the threshold keep 0%. A 10% corporate tax has also been proposed from 2027 for companies above the stated revenue or profit thresholds, subject to legislative approval. The signal matters: taxation is coming to the Gulf in stages, and we build structures with the substance to age well.

What taxes exist today?+

For a typical foreign-owned company: corporate tax 0%, no withholding on dividends, interest or royalties, no personal income tax, VAT at 10% above the threshold, and GOSI social insurance on payroll. Oil has its own regime; €750M+ groups pay the top-up. It remains one of the cleanest tax pictures on Earth - stated with its expiry risks.

Why is the CBB such an asset?+

Because its licences mean something: the Central Bank of Bahrain regulates banking, payments, crypto and insurance under one roof, mandated open banking before anyone else in the region, and runs a sandbox that graduates real companies. A CBB payments or crypto-asset licence opens conversations across the Gulf. We run those applications as dedicated projects - see our Bahrain crypto-licence page.

What does the US FTA actually give?+

Duty-free access to the American market for qualifying Bahrain-origin goods, subject to the applicable rules of origin. Bahrain is one of two GCC states with a bilateral US FTA. For manufacturers otherwise exporting from Asia, production in Bahrain may reduce US tariff costs where the finished goods qualify.

Is Bahrain a market or a base?+

A base - honestly. The island's 1.5 million people make a fine pilot market and a poor destination strategy. The play is commanding the Gulf from Bahrain: Saudi Arabia fifteen minutes over the causeway, the GCC within a short flight, and your overheads structurally below the neighbours'. Businesses that grasp this thrive; those expecting Dubai's footfall do not.

How is banking?+

High-quality and seriously compliant: NBB, BBK, ABC and the international branches run real KYC, want credible files, and reward them with excellent multi-currency service. Two to four weeks with a well-built application is normal. The CBB's standards are why the system is trusted - and why improvisation fails here faster than elsewhere.

How long does company registration in Bahrain take?+

The company: one to three weeks through Sijilat. Banking: two to four more. Golden residency: two to four weeks after that. CBB licences: their own multi-month tracks, quoted honestly per case. A working, banked Gulf base within six weeks is the realistic default.
