Iceland in brief

A hundred percent renewable, and priced accordingly.

Iceland runs entirely on geothermal and hydro power: the cheapest firmly green electricity in Europe, in a naturally cold climate. That combination built an industry - aluminium smelters first, then data centres and compute-heavy operations that need clean megawatts at predictable prices. Around it sits a Nordic institutional package (EEA membership granting single-market access without EU dues, Schengen, top-tier governance) and a 20% corporate tax, with an ehf. that incorporates through the RSK register in a week or two on ISK 500,000 of capital.

First, the scale. The home market is 400,000 people; you register in Iceland to serve energy-hungry workloads, tourism or exports, not domestic demand. The króna is small and historically temperamental (the capital-controls era ended in 2017, but treasury planning still respects it). The board needs an EEA-resident majority, which non-EEA founders solve with our support or an exemption. Costs, from salaries to services, run Nordic-high. For green compute, energy-intensive industry and businesses that want the EEA flag with Atlantic positioning, the island earns its place on the shortlist.

100% geothermal and hydro: the cheapest firmly green megawatts in Europe, in natural cooling. Built aluminium first, now data centres and AI compute. Around it: EEA access without EU dues, Schengen, 20% tax, RSK registration in weeks.

400,000 people at home means you come for energy, tourism or exports, not domestic scale. The króna deserves respect, boards need an EEA majority (solved day one), and costs run Nordic-high.

How it compares

Iceland next to the Nordic shortlist.

Norway shares the EEA-not-EU model at higher costs; Denmark and Finland offer the EU proper; Ireland competes for data centres on tax instead of power. Iceland's case is energy plus the EEA. FAQ

What clients ask about Iceland.

Can I open an Icelandic company without visiting?+

Yes. With an apostilled power of attorney we file at the RSK register, obtain the kennitala and activate tax and VSK remotely. Banks are relationship-driven: one meeting is common, video sometimes accepted. We plan that step with you.

How much does it cost?+

Turnkey registration starts from €2,900 including register fees and the first year of the registered address. With a bank account arranged, packages start from €4,900. The ISK 500,000 capital stays the company's money. Renewals with accounting run from €2,200 a year, at Nordic cost levels.

What taxes will the company pay?+

20% on profits, 22% capital-income tax when dividends reach individuals (EEA corporate shareholders reclaim), VAT at 24% with an 11% reduced band. No municipal profit surcharges. We model your numbers, including the energy side for compute projects, before you commit.

What does EEA membership actually give me?+

The single market without the EU: free movement of goods, services, capital and people across the whole EEA, Schengen travel, EU-recognised standards. What it doesn't include: the customs union and agricultural regimes, relevant for physical goods routing, which we plan case by case. For services and digital business the access is effectively complete.

What is the board residency rule?+

The managing director and a majority of the board must reside in the EEA. Non-EEA founders solve it with an EEA-resident director (ours available), or an exemption from the ministry in qualifying cases. We settle this on day one so the registration never stalls on it.

Why do data centres choose Iceland?+

Three inputs, all structural: electricity that is 100% renewable and cheap on long-term contracts, free natural cooling most of the year, and EEA legal standing with subsea fibre to both Europe and America. For AI, HPC and blockchain workloads the operating math often beats continental sites - and the power contract, not the company, is the critical path we start first.

How is the króna to live with?+

Small, floating and historically temperamental: the 2008 controls era ended in 2017 and the system has been stable since, but euro or dollar-invoicing businesses should plan treasury deliberately. Banks open multi-currency accounts as standard, and power contracts can be denominated in dollars, which removes most of the exposure that matters.

How is banking?+

Concentrated and solid: Landsbankinn, Íslandsbanki and Arion, rebuilt post-2008 into conservative, well-capitalised institutions. KYC on foreign-owned companies is thorough and relationship-driven. We prepare the file, introduce you properly, and multi-currency accounts follow.

Iceland or Norway?+

Both offer the EEA-not-EU model with Nordic governance. Norway brings a vastly bigger economy and oil-services demand at 22%, with higher operating costs. Iceland brings cheaper green power, a lighter rate and a faster registry: decisive for compute, irrelevant for oil services. The workload usually makes the choice.

How long does it take?+

Plan one to two weeks: days for documents and the board solution, under a week at the RSK register, then tax and VSK activation. Banking adds one to two weeks. For data-centre projects the power and site conversations run in parallel from day one; they, not the paperwork, set the real calendar.
